Your Host: Lisa Sheppard
Lisa is a singer-songwriter and musician from Montreal. She started writing songs as a teenager—a passion that still lights her up today. She studied classical and jazz guitar at Vanier College. She also studied piano, bass, and arranging independently. Lisa co-founded the OKChorale community choir and co-lead it until end of 2023. She released an acoustic, solo album of originals songs in 2000. Her latest EP To Being is out now.
The Montreal Songwriters' Circle is dedicated to supporting songwriters in honing their craft. The events foster creativity, accountability, and meaningful connections within the songwriting community.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I join if I’m a beginner?
Yes, unless specified, workshops are open to songwriters of all levels. Whether you’re just starting out, mid-process, or more experienced, you’re welcome to join.
Do I need to bring my own instrument?
There is a piano onsite, and participants bring their own guitars or other instruments for accompaniment. If you need an amp, please let us know in advance, and we'll have it ready for you.
Do I have to perform my song?
For workshops including peer feedback, yes, you will be asked to share your song live during the session. However, the focus is not on performance or singing ability—it's about sharing your work, receiving feedback, and learning from the process. Live sharing adds to the overall experience and helps you grow as a songwriter.
What happens if the sessions are full?
If the session is full, we will add an extra session, provided there's enough demand. Please note, a minimum of three participants is required for the session to go ahead and be worthwhile.
I'm not sure I want to join for the full term, can I drop in?
Drop-ins are possible depending on availability. If you're unsure about committing to full-term workshops, like the Songwriters' Circle, feel free to email music@lisajoysheppard.com to check for available spots. However, those who have seen the most improvement have attended the full term, as the consistency and feedback over time really help with growth. You can also check out the taster sessions to get a feel for the longer programs.
What if I can’t make a session?
We understand that life happens! If you can't make a session, we'll provide activities for you to work on and catch up. Please note, there are no refunds for the full-term package once the term has started.

REfund policy
For pay-what-you-can workshops, all sales are final.
If you can’t attend, you’re welcome to gift your spot to someone else.
For term sessions, no refunds are issued once the term has started. In some cases, a credit may be applied toward a future session (subject to availability and approval).
Thank you for understanding — this helps keep small, independent music programs sustainable.
